Our History
Our historic cottage was built following the English Civil War. The village of Warcop and the surrounding areas are full of history, Warcop dating back to the Roman times when it was a Roman marching camp. You can follow Lady Anne’s way, Lady Anne Clifford being one of the Eden Valley’s most illustrious inhabitants, through the area from Pendragon Castle, the place of King Arthur’s father’s death, past Brough Castle and through Appleby to Brougham Castle just outside of Penrith and into the gateway to the Lake District.
We look forward to welcoming you.

The Officer’s Mess
In 1861 the cottage’s neighbour, the Nook, was built for a gentleman called Dr Richardson (Above), it included the dog kennels, coach house and coachmans home, Christopher’s Cottage that still stands today. During the Second World War, The Nook was used as the Officer’s Mess for the War Office.
With gardens to the front, side and rear of the houses as well as views over into the orchard, you are never far from greenery and fresh air so synonymous with Cumbria.
During the Second World War, The Nook and gardens were used as an Army base. The main house, The Nook was the officer’s mess and the surrounding gardens housed Nissen Huts, home to the Tommys’.
An Example of a Nissen Hut
The side & rear gardens at The Nook housed 4 Nissen huts housing the general “Tommys’”. The side garden also had tennis courts for the Army to use.
