The Borders

Carlisle or in Roman times, Luguvalium, the great border city of England.

Carlisle

Known as the Great Boarder City, the city is a beautiful Georgian city set on the board of England & Scotland. A vibrant selection of shops, cafes, historic castles, museums, art galleries and a Cathedral with one of the finest ceilings in Britain. The city is home to the most sieged Castle in England and is only a 10 minute drive to the Solway Firth an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which spans the coast of North West Cumbria down to the Georgian port towns of Whiteheaven and Maryport. Described by Charles Dickens as the finest coast in all of Britain and its Isles. You’re only a stones through from Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman Fort Museum. The surrounding villages of Burgh-by-Sands, Kirkoswalds-on-Eden, Warwick Bridge, Warwick-on-Eden, Wetheral, Lanercost and Brampton are all full of beautiful walks, tearooms and attractions. If walking is your game then why not try the beautiful Border Reiver Trail and follow the historic footsteps of the barbarous border reivers and the rival families based along the border land in England & Scotland.
